Preparing for Pregnancy

For many women and their partners, the decision to have a baby does not come lightly. A new baby affects our lives on many levels.

If you are considering having a baby, whether it is your first or an additional child, there are several things that you may wish to consider. Nothing can ever really prepare you for parenthood, but there are things that you can think about and precautions you can take to optimise your health and to reduce some of the stress that comes with early parenthood.
There is a lot of myth and speculation surrounding pregnancy and childbirth. Wading through it can be difficult and time consuming. Be prepared to question the things you read and hear, and seek a variety of expert opinions.
In the fact sheets listed below we attempt to consider all the questions you may have but it is a guide only. You should discuss any issues that are important to you with your health professional.
The information in the fact sheets is not intended to be exhaustive nor is it intended to cause anxiety. It is hoped that this information clarifies some issues and encourages women and their partners to plan for a healthy pregnancy and a positive beginning to life as a parent.
